Your Organisation Needs an Immune System

You don't wake up each winter and try to work out exactly which bug is going around, then build a defence for that one thing. You'd never keep up. New strains arrive every year, and half of them nobody has seen before.

Instead, your body carries a standing capability. An immune system that doesn't need to know what's coming. It recognises trouble when it turns up, responds, adapts, and remembers. It's ready for the threat it has never met.

And here's the part I find interesting. A healthy system does more than survive the challenge. The right amount of stress, met well and recovered from, makes it stronger. Load, rest, repeat. The body that's looked after handles what the run-down body cannot.

That's the picture I keep coming back to for organisations heading into a decade they can't forecast.

Are your best people genuinely resourced for whatever the next two to five years throws at them? Or are they already at capacity, with nobody watching closely enough to notice?

You can spend your energy trying to predict the next disruption, while at the same time battling the headwinds and fronts you can see.

The next market shift, the next competitor move, the next thing AI does to your industry. And you'll be wrong about the specifics most of the time, because that's the nature of unpredictability.

Or you can build the standing capability. The organisational version of an immune system. A group of leaders, carefully chosen as the Critical Action team, the frontline defence, who don't need a script for the exact crisis, because they are ready.  Ready to read what's happening, stay steady, respond and adapt, whatever turns up.
